Obituary of Jan Edward Thompson
Jan Edward Thompson, age 73, of New Haven, Mo, formerly of Moberly, Mo, passed away January 27, 2018.
Jan was born on May 21, 1944 in Ridgeway, Penn., to Charles and Mary Ellen (Hill) Thompson. He graduated from Moberly High School class of 1962, and attended Moberly Junior College. He enlisted in the Army, earning Sergeant E5 rank in Military Intelligence with Top Secret Clearance. After his service, he went back to Moberly where he went into business with his family, becoming co-owner of Thompson’s TV, and later owner of JT’s Rent-To-Own. On April 28, 1974, Jan married the love of his life, Brenda (Bergey).
Jan was an Eagle Scout and on the Eagle board of review for more than 10 years. He served as past President and Officer of the Moberly Chamber of Commerce, co-founder and past President of Moberly Downtown Association, co-founder and board member of the Rent-to-Own Association in Missouri and Iowa, past President and Director of the Moberly Country Club, past President and member of the Finance Committee of the United Way, former deacon, Sunday School teacher and Treasurer at Trinity United Methodist Church in Moberly, on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army and directed the annual Tree of Lights Campaign for 10 years.
Jan loved sailing, snowmobiling, and watching his favorite team, the St. Louis Cardinals, but his greatest passion was golf and he played as much and as often as he could. Jan had a deep faith in God and was a member of Saint Peter’s United Church of Christ.
The core of Jan’s life was the love of his family. His ultimate joy was to see his children happily married and to welcome his precious granddaughter into the world. We will all miss his hugs and kisses, and that unique sense of humor and wit he had to make us all laugh in any kind of circumstance.
Jan was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Brenda, son Aaron (Kavita) Thompson, Ann (Michael) Matkovic, granddaughter Harper Matkovic, sister Cindy Roberts, brother John (Linda) Thompson, sister Penny (Jay) Stratton, brother-in-law Barry (Jean) Bergey, sister-in-law Colleen (Gary) Kuhn, sister-in-law Christine (Eric) Meyer, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
